Recently, I had the honor of capturing Jessie and Jimmy on their wedding day. It was hot and sweaty, and I may have suffered a slight heat stroke, but any suffering on my part was well worth it. These two are in love. These two are made for each other.

I met Jessie and Jimmy last fall and did their engagement session shortly after. (Click Here and Here for their engagement session) I simply adore this couple! I would have suffered multiple heat strokes for them! :)

Stony Point Hall was gorgeous! They did a fabulous job, and I highly recommend this place!

Salute to Barry and Jessica

I suppose you could say that I have my Mother to thank for our friendship.

I was in the 4th grade when Jessica and her family moved to my hometown, and ended up in my church one Sunday night. My sister and I always had slumber parties at our house... especially for our birthdays. We were in the middle of planning one of those slumber parties, when my Mom said to me
"Why don't you invite the new girl to your party?"

I'm sure at the mature age of 9, I responded with something like,
"Uh, really? That's kinda weird... I don't even know her"
But my Mother, in all of her wisdom, insisted.
And from there came a friendship that sculpted and shaped my childhood.

Jessica and I were the best of friends, and the worst of friends. We hung out all the time... laughed at anything and everything.... and fought with each other at the drop of a hat. We creatively named our fights, World Wars.
I think by the time we graduated high school, we had gone through 20 something World Wars.

Yes, our friendship was epic.

It's been years since we've hung out together. Time and distance will do that to a friendship, but we've never lost touch... Especially thanks to the wonderful world of facebook.
Last weekend, I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Jess and her family back in our hometown....

Where it all began.

Her husband, Barry, serves in the National Guard, and will be deployed soon.
It was an honor to photograph a solider and his family, and my friend.

Thank you for the good times... the laughs... the memories. I love you, my friend!

Wedding of Renae and Drew

I couldn't have asked for a better day! The air was light and breezy, the sun was shinning, and the bride was simply gorgeous!

I've been waiting for this day ever since I met Renae and her Mom at a bridal show in November of 2009. It seems like forever ago, and yet it was here before we knew it. I knew when I did Renae and Drew's engagement session last August, that their wedding was going to be amazing. This was confirmed when I walked with the couple outside for some photos. I overheard drew say to Renae as he held her hand, and looked into her eyes

"This is the best part"

And that's how you know... Beyond the dress... the decorations... the guest-list... the reception hall... the cake... This one day boils down to one thing.

A boy and a girl who fell in love.

Wedding of Danielle and Beau

I've known Danielle for as long as I can remember. Many of my childhood memories are of her and her sister and brother.

For years we were all inseparable.... we were best friends... we are cousins... we're family.

Time and distance have kept us all a part over the years, but that can never break the bond of family. I was beyond thrilled when Danielle contacted me, and told me she wanted nobody else but me to photograph her wedding day.

Danielle had found the one... her soulmate... the one who could complete her. Beau had came into her life, changed her... healed her... loved her. And now, she wanted nothing more than to spend every day... the rest of her days... with him.

What an honor it was to document the start of that!

Cowboy Boots and Pearls :: Moriah and Steven Engagement

They met at church. She caught his eye, and he won her heart, and on a snowy night in Colorado, a man got down on one knee, pledged his love, and asked a girl to marry him. Without a doubt, that girl said yes.
She is Moriah.
He is Steven.

He calls her Sugar.

I call them Beautiful.

Their love is refreshing, and this past Saturday, I got to enjoy this breath of fresh air.

Moriah loves horses, so I thought what better place to document their love, than the place she loves to spend time at.

Ummm.... Gorgeous.

I didn't want this session to end, in fact, I was having so much fun I think I kept them out for well over 2 hours :)

Moriah and Steven, I can't even begin to express what an honor it is to be able to document your love, and this new season in your lives! I have been blessed in knowing you!

Playing Catch-Up

I can't believe how fast time has flown by! Since my last post, I celebrated my nephew's 3rd birthday in Springfield, and I turned 31...Ahhhhh!!!! I also covered an Iron Chef fundraiser competion for The Children's Center for the Visually Impaired. I did photos for TWO local magazines, and finished my taxes... yea for refunds! In addition to all of that, I got my haircut and celebrated 5 years of marriage with my husband. We started attending a new church, and I had TONs of coffee dates with dear friends and old/new clients.... Whew! What a whirlwind!

So, instead of doing a post on each event described above, I thought I would share an image from each session:

Leawood Historic Sites Tour :: Leawood Photographer

Saturday, I had the opportunity to shoot for Leawood Lifestyle Magazine for an article in one of their upcoming issues. The article entails the historical sites still available to tour in Leawood. Paul and I packed up the jeep, and began our day at the Somerset Shops on Somerset Drive and Lee Boulevard. I loved shopping around at the Vintage Market. So many unique items! I could have spent my whole paycheck in there!

Next on our tour was Leawood's First City Hall on 96th Street and Lee Boulevard.

My favorite stop of the day, was our visit to the Sharp Farm off 131st Street and Mission Road. Stu and Diane Sharp own one of the last working farms left in Leawood. Paul and I could have stayed there all day. Stu and Diane welcomed us with open arms, and willingly shared the farm's history with us.

Another interesting stop, was the Oxford Schoolhouse located in Ironwoods Park on 147th Street and Mission Road.

It's amazing to think that this was what life was like not that long ago.

Our last stop on the Leawood Historical Tour, was the Graham Giblin Home on 143rd and Kenneth Road. Unfortunately, Mrs. Giblin was not at home, but I did get her permission beforehand to take a couple of shots of her home.

This home was built by William Albertus McKinney in 1880.

It was such a gorgeous day, that we decided to keep heading south and end our trip at Somerset Ridge. They recently won the prestigious Jefferson Cup award for their Oktoberfest German Style White Wine. Very well deserved!

Alas, all great days must come to an end.

There's no place like home, and Sunday morning breakfast

Sometimes, I feel a bit guilty for having grown up the way I did. We weren't rich in terms of money, or had a lot of things, but we were extremely rich when it came to family. I have the best parents in the world, and a brother and sister I can call my best friends. We have a wealth of memories, good times shared, and have overflowed with laughter. We are rich in terms of love. Many people I know do not have a family like I do... many of my friends did not grow up the way I did. I am so blessed to have the family I have. I am truly wealthy.

This morning I went through some images I had taken over Christmas spent with my family.

These images made me long for my childhood, and Sunday morning breakfast.

Dad with Joah. Dad hasn't changed. He always took time for us, played with us, provided for us, and saw the best in us.
It continues to this day, and now it passes on to his grandson.

To me, my Dad is the ultimate example of what a Father should be.

I can't even begin to count how many times Mom has made this biscuit recipe. We had them often.

We always had every meal at the table together. A concept lost by many families today.

No TV.... cellphones didn't even exist, and facebook was what happened when you fell asleep while reading.

Mom, I know you are in your pjs in these images, and you may feel you look silly, but I think you are beautiful.

These images mean the world to me.

These images remind me of the amazing childhood you and Dad gave us!

I think Joah approves of Sunday morning breakfast :)

At Home with the Morrows

Saturday, I had the opportunity to spend the morning with the Morrow family. Four boys.... all age 8 and under!

They kept me on my toes and then some!

I'm not a fan of the traditional family picture with everyone smiling at the camera, which makes me love the image below. It's not perfect, but a perfect example of their personalities.

Colin is 18 months old. Either he's not a fan of me in the image below, or he's not a fan of growing up.

I prefer to think it's the latter :)

Okay boys... I can take a hint :)

Tiffany & Dan :: KC Reception

I don't know who has been more excited about this post, me... or the bride :)

I've been waiting for this day for over a year. Tiffany and Dan were the winners of my free wedding package giveaway at last years bridal show. (You can find that story HERE.) From the moment I met up with Tiffany, I knew it was going to be amazing! If I were to write a list of everything I wanted in my "perfect bride and groom", I would only have to write three words down....

We've met up several times throughout the year to discuss plans, shoot an Engagement Session, and just to hang out. It's been a blast getting to know them, and I know I've found a lifelong friend in Tiffany. My heart is so full right now, and as I've been preparing this post, it's almost been ready to burst. This wedding reception has been a culmination of over a year of planning, and it also happens to bring my 2010 wedding season to a close. Being a part of this day, and being able to give of myself has been a true reminder and reflection of why I do what I do, and why I love it so much!

The reception was held at the ever fabulous Californos in Westport.

Tiffany and Dan stayed in The Q Hotel and Spa which is also in Westport.

Dan's a lucky man... Tiffany is flawless.

I want to give a big shout out to The Velvet Dog in the Martini Corner district! They weren't even open yet, but allowed us to come in out of the cold for a few shots... they even gave a round of shots on the house!

One word.... HOT! I love everything about this image below! In fact, so does Tiffany. I hope she doesn't mind but here is what she had to say about the image:

"I've looked at the "red couch" picture probably 200 times today (I sure hope FB doesn't alert you every time I look at a picture or that would be really embarrassing!). I really can't quit staring at it. And it's not because I love my dress or Dan's tie . . . you captured something that I've never seen before in over 6 years of "pictures" of Dan & I. Even though we obviously knew you were taking a picture, it's not fake, it's not posed. It's Dan & I. I love that one stinking picture more than most things in life. :)"

Legacy Leavers :: Papa Robie

I watched as she stood next to the casket, tears welling up in her eyes... she desperately clutched the flag that had only moments before been presented to her. Her feet, I'm sure, felt like blocks of cement... they refused to move. How could he leave her after all these years? How on earth could she leave him?

Theirs was a love of a lifetime. She was his sweetie Edie, and he was her Robie. A chance meeting had brought them together. Love bonded their hearts... sealed their fates, and set the course for their destinies. A lifetime unfolded before them.... new jobs... new cities... new friends, and children. Throughout all the changes, the heartaches, the laughter, the joys, and tears... they were each other's unremitting foundation. Their love was the one thing that remained faithful. To know them, was to truly know a couple in love.

Robie left this life last Sunday. He went peacefully in his sleep while his beloved slept beside him. He left behind a legacy of love... a legacy of life lived to the fullest... a life filled with family and friends... a life that was truly filled.

Recently, I was able to capture a few images of Robie and Edie at their home in Salina.

He loved golf... next to Edie, it was his passion.

Robie was a great man, husband, father, grandfather, co-worker, and friend. He was a man of honor... A man who lived a life worth remembering... a life worth honoring.

As I mourned with Robie's family this past week, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of legacy I would leave. How am I living my life to honor those who have gone before me? Would I leave a life that was lived to it's fullest? Would there be regrets? Chances not taken? Opportunities missed? I desperately hope not, but how many moments... how many days have I let slip by without a second thought?

We all hope to leave a life worthy of remembering, but how many of us live our days worthy of repeating?

Robie, you gave so much to those you love. May we give back in honor of you, and the life you lived.

This past Sunday, I was able to hang out with one of my favorite families! We got together for some Christmas portraits and holiday fun.

This is a portrait they will leave for Santa, as proof they've been good this year :)

After our "formal portraits", we headed to the kitchen to paint gingerbread men.

After our painting project, it was time for a reward for such good behavior. Sugar cookies and butter cream icing!!!

I think there was more icing going into mouths than on the cookies :)

I always enjoy catching up with the Bamber's, and this session was a lot of fun. I managed to get out with minimal amounts of icing in my hair :)

Last week, I met up with a good friend of mine to shoot a Christmas concept idea she had. I've never had a photo session go so quickly, or so smoothly! The boys practically ran me down at the door! They were so excited for this shoot! It might have had something to do with the fact that they got to choose whatever they wanted to wear, and the fact that it involved chocolate syrup, and tons of flour :)

We began with a mess, and ended with a mess.

At Home with the Bouchers

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to hang out with the Boucher family. What an amazing family they are! They are truly a pure definition of what it means to be a family. Even though the girls are young, they all express a genuine closeness, respect, and love for one another.

We began our session with some playtime on the swings.

I don't think they get any cuter than this!

I love this shot below... makes me wish I lived closer to my own sister.

Puzzle time with Grandma! This is one of their favorite things to do!

Family Devotion time. This is their foundation, and truly the reason they are so close. It may sound cheesy, but I firmly believe that the family that prays together... stays together.

I love this next set of images. Anna was so proud of the memory verse she had learned... preach it girl!

Gabe and Jackie. They've known each other for 15yrs, and have recently celebrated 10yrs of marriage. Gabe told me he couldn't remember what life was like without Jackie. His wife and girls are his world!

Happy Birthday, Grandma!

Last weekend, I went home with my sister and brother to surprise my Grandma for her 80th birthday. She had no idea we were coming. As our gift, we decided to spend the night with her, the way we used to as children. It was so nice nice to spend time with her. We hung out all afternoon, and then brought out the Wii that evening. If you ever want a good laugh, watch us all attempt the obstacle course or the tilt board on WiiFit :)

While there, I took some time to go through my Grandma's house, and snap some shots. I like the image of the thread below. When we were little, my Grandma made clothes for us all the time. Everything from shorts to dresses. Even though I hated wearing dresses, looking back it means a lot to me. I don't know a single person who makes their own clothes anymore.

For as long as I can remember, Grandma has always kept her perfume in the same spot, on a tray on top of her dresser.

I love the shot of the old cookbook and yarn. My Grandma has tons of books in her house... tons. My sister and Mom read them all the time.

I have no idea what the list at the bottom is for, but I've always liked my Grandma's handwriting.

I love the sound of my Grandma's mixer running; it means her yummy mash potatoes are on their way!

This bowl of apples was on her table in the basement. Fruit can always be found in my Grandma's basement. Sometimes it's peaches that have been freshly picked... she lays them out on newspaper all across the floor. Other times it's jars and jars of canned vegetables... particularly green beans and corn. Yum!

On Sunday, we had a cousin's reunion where we surprised her once again with cake and flowers.

The cake was fabulous, thanks to the amazing Rita Bridges!

The Gonzalez Family goes to Somerset

I love any chance I get to come out to Somerset Ridge Winery! There is something so intoxicating about this place. Perhaps it's the location; nestled in the scenic heart of Louisburg... or the fact that life here is so peaceful and serene. Or maybe it's the owners, Dennis and Cindy Reynolds, who make you feel like family from the moment you meet them. But truly, I think it's because it feels a little like home. And what better place to bring a family for a portrait session, than a place that feels like home!

This was Chris and Katie's first visit to Somerset... I'm confident that it will not be their last!

Boys are always full of energy... today was no exception!

I'm not quite sure what's going on in this picture, but it's pretty darn cute!

A Family Affair

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to photograph this wonderful family. I've known them for years, and even did their oldest daughter's engagement pictures 7yrs ago... that was back in the good ol' film days!

I don't think I've ever laughed so much at a family session! Such a fun group to hang out with!

Kayleigh + Rob :: Manhattan Wedding

When I arrived at Kayleigh's house last Saturday to begin taking pictures, Kayleigh told me, "Christina, just tell me what to do, and I'll do it." My response to her was, "The only thing you are required to do today, is to feel absolutely gorgeous, and to be madly in love with Rob." And so the day began.

The house was a flurry of bridesmaids. Music, playing in the background from an ipod playlist, accompanied the process. Hairspray threatened my ability to breathe. And Kayleigh... Kayleigh was calm... at least she appeared to be, and even though dressed in a button up shirt and jeans... she was already gorgeous. This day had finally arrived!

Every bride and groom I work with has their own unique qualities, their own stories and personalities that make each wedding I shoot special. I had been looking forward to this wedding since I met Kayleigh and Rob last winter. It was confirmed this day was going to be special, the minute I saw this moment of Kayleigh writing a letter to Rob.

Kayleigh, you're beautiful.. gorgeous... radiant.

James, Carrie, Jake, and Carleigh

I remember when I first met this family. It was 2002, and my first year as a teaching assistant at the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired. My class was the preschool 1 class for 2 and 3yr olds. This is where I met Carleigh. She had not yet turned 2yrs old, so her mom, Carrie, stayed in our class with Carleigh for the first several weeks. So much of the unknown surrounded Carleigh at this time. How well would she be able to see? Will she ever talk? Would she ever have her own independence? Will she have friends? Will she have a life?

Now, 8yrs later, we can answer those questions with a resounding YES! She is such an amazing young girl, full of life, and love. Her laughter is contagious, and her personality... magnetic. She'll ask you a million questions, and give you a million reasons to love her, and to love life. And let's not forget Carleigh's older brother, Jake. What a stud! He loves his sister so much, and knows how to take care of her. I mentioned Carleigh's contagious laughter earlier... I think Jake brings it out the best. He's the best big brother Carleigh could have ever asked for!

This family will forever hold a special place in my heart, and it was so good to meet up with them last weekend, and catch up on life. My favorite moment of the session was actually after I was done shooting. Carrie and I sat on the front porch, chatting back and forth while Carleigh played with her neighborhood friends. Carleigh uses a power chair, and drives it with such ease and independence. It was so wonderful to see her take off down the sidewalk on her own and play with her friends!

What a beautiful family!

Before our session began, Carrie brought out some pictures I had taken of the kids a few years ago. One of them was a picture of Carleigh kissing Jake. Carleigh wanted to recreate that image. As you can tell, Jake loved it :)

Kansas City Engagement :: Jimmy & Jessie

I knew from the moment I walked into my meeting with Jessie and Jimmy, that this couple would hold a very special place in my heart. Maybe it was the way they looked at each other... the little glances, the subtle touches on the arm. Maybe it was the fact they both were redheads, and both were kissed with freckles... maybe it was the tears in Jessie's eyes as I shared my heart and passion. In the end, I think that perhaps it was their story, as told from Jimmy's point of view:

"Have you ever heard the saying “if you love someone, set her free. If she returns, then she was always yours”? This holds especially true in my relationship with Jessie. I first developed my crush on Jessie during my senior year of high school. I was the star of the football team, and she was the team’s water girl. I am an asthmatic, and Jessie was put in charge of holding my rescue inhaler; bringing it to me if I started feeling short of breath. She would always be aware of where I was, so that she could come and save the day. She did not realize that having to interact with the girl that takes my breath away didn’t make it easy to catch my breath. I found out that she had a crush on me sometime in the spring semester. We shared a dance at the prom and then didn’t leave each other’s side throughout the rest of the summer. It was very exciting to fall in love with Jessie. She is so kind and gentle, and knows exactly what to do to make me feel special. I learned from her what it was to be completely in love.... "

"... In August, I moved to Manhattan, to attend school at Kansas State University. Jessie stayed at home in McLouth, to finish her last year of high school. The distance, and difference in lifestyle proved too much for two 18 year old kids to handle. We split up, and spent the next 5 years apart. It gave us an opportunity to grow up, and discover who we are as adult individuals. We kept in touch, however, throughout this time. Jessie moved to Kansas City after her high school graduation. She became a mother to a beautiful little girl, Caitlin, who is now 5. I also moved to Kansas City after I graduated from K-State. It took me a year and half of living in Kansas City before I got the courage, and appropriate timing to call Jessie and invite her to lunch, and we’ve been together ever since. I am so happy to have her back. We also have tremendous confidence in our relationship because we know what it’s like to have lost each other, and we never want to be apart again... "

This past Sunday, I met up with Jimmy and Jessie along with Jessie's daughter, Caitlin. Jessie and Jimmy are getting married next year at Stony Point Hall in Baldwin, KS, and decided to do their engagement session there as well. What a beautiful place... a gorgeous couple... and an amazing family!

We began the engagement session with a few family images.

Where are they now :: Todd and Candy

Earlier this summer, I met up with Todd and Candy in Springfield, MO. Todd and Candy married October 6th, 2001. Their wedding was the very first wedding I ever shot. Their wedding is what started it all. I wasn't their hired photographer, but Candy knew I liked playing with cameras, and especially enjoyed using black and white film... yes, you heard correctly... film. She asked me if I would be willing to shoot some candid images of their day. Without having a single clue about f-stops or shutter speeds... let alone what the heck ISO meant... I agreed. And so, with my friend's Nikon N 60, and a few rolls of Ilford black and white film, my life as a photographer began.

I thought it would be interesting to catch up with them, and see where life has brought them over the years.
Meet the Sitclers:

How did you two meet?
We met at Antioch Church in Overland Park, KS on a Sunday morning. I had been working at the church as an intern for 2 years, Candy was coming in from Arizona, where she had worked with a church for 3 years. We were in different ministries, but worked together around the church on a number of different projects. The more we worked together, the more our friendship grew.

How did you propose?
I didn't just want to do the stereotypical dinner and an engagement. I wanted it to be memorable. A good friend suggested that I make a day of it and lead her on a scavenger hunt. I enlisted the help of a number of friends who all made it happen.

At that time, Candy was the church receptionist. I was able to work with her boss and have Candy run some errands she would think it were for the church. Candy went to three businesses owned by members in the church to pick up items "needed for different ministries." Each one contained a gift and a card (numbered in the order I wanted her to read them). At the last location, she was instructed to open card #1 and follow the instructions.

The first card instructed her to go to her home where I had set up her VCR with a tape I made for her. It was a simple slideshow of our times together put to the Caedmon's Call song "Somewhere North." The other cards took her to locations of memorable times we spent together; talking late over dinner at McDonald's or sharing a coffee at Starbucks.

The last card took her to the Overland Park Arboretum where we had spent time walking through the gardens and trails together. While sitting there reading her last card, I walked up with her favorite flower, Stargazers. I told her how much I loved her, got on my knees and asked her to marry me.

What was your favorite part about your wedding day?

This is going to sound like a fake answer, but the WHOLE day would have to be my "favorite part." I can't pick one point out as the best. The family, friends, events, and my lovely bride, made it all incredible.

Any advice you would give to newlyweds?

I would tell newlyweds what my father told me on that day: If the husband chooses to serve his wife, putting her needs always first, without looking for that treatment in return, and the wife chooses to serve her husband, putting his needs always first, without looking for that treatment in return, then both of their needs will be met, and they will live a wonderful marriage.

This can appear to be somewhat out of reach. Over decades of marriage, we all will have bad days, and may even have horrible seasons, but I believe that God isn't asking for perfection from us, He is asking for excellence. I walk this out, continually fighting and believing that one day, I will be the man my wife deserves.

What is life like now?
I love our life. As of this date, we have 2 wonderful boys; Joshua & Devin. We've moved 3 times since we've been married, and are doing what we love as youth pastors. We've been together through times of plenty, and years of want, but we are a team, we are a family and we choose to love each other everyday.

Any additional comments?
Everyday I realize that I don't deserve my wife. She is too good, too beautiful, too wonderful, too gracious, too lovely to be mine. The choices of my life should have brought a damaged marriage. But isn't that the definition of Grace; To receive more than you deserve? My wife is the Grace of God in my life.

Wow, Todd! What a testament to a marriage that's truly committed to each other, and committed to the vows and promises made! How I long for this kind of marriage for all of my brides and grooms... past, present, and future!

It was so much fun catching up with you both, and to see where life has brought you. I'm so grateful for the opportunity you gave a naive little 21yr old on your wedding day. I'm honored to know you both, and am so glad to call you my friends!

Charlie

He was a boy with a disability, yet he had the ability to touch so many lives. I feel so lucky to have known Charlie. He first came into my life in 2003, when he entered into my preschool class at The Children's Center for the Visually Impaired. From the very beginning I knew there was something special about Charlie... I felt drawn to him, and loved spending time with him in the classroom. Charlie couldn't communicate in the same way you and I do... he had his own unique way. His smile was infectious, and when he was happy... you knew it.

This past spring, I had the opportunity to photograph Charlie with his Mom. It was so good to see him, and to see how much he had grown. His mom shared school pictures, and stories... memories, and the many silly things Charlie loved to do. She also shared concerns and sorrows... Charlie had been through, and struggled with a lot. I'm so grateful for the time I had with him that day, because this past Monday, Charlie passed away. I had been to the hospital just the day before to visit him. I was able to hold his hand one last time, and before I left his side, I felt him squeeze back.... almost as if he were saying goodbye. I'll never forget that little moment we shared.

His death is bittersweet. Bitter in the fact that he is gone, but sweet in knowing that he is no longer in pain. Sweeter still, is the fact that I believe I will see him again... only then, I will see a different version of Charlie. A Charlie whose body is whole... A Charlie who can run and walk... A Charlie who can speak and see clearly... A Charlie without pain. It will be like meeting a whole new person. What an amazing moment that will be!

Charlie, you were loved by so many, and you will be greatly missed by all of us. Thank you for touching our lives... thank you for your smile and laughter... your silly ways... Thank you for being you. I look forward to the day I will see you again...

Oh Brother

When he was born, my sister couldn't wait to hold him... I just wanted to play with him. When he got a little older, he had a knack of driving me nuts. A couple years later, we fought like cats and dogs. I couldn't stand to be with him, yet couldn't live without him. He was a boy, now he's a man.... He is my brother.

Last weekend, I was able to spend some time with my brother. When I moved away from home after High School, he was still in Junior High. I feel I missed out on so much of his life by moving away. I missed out on a boy becoming a man. Even though he still drives me nuts... I love my brother, and am so very proud of him!

He was always a ham in front of the camera when he was little... Time changes many things... not this one, though!

Kansas City Engagement :: Renae & Drew

It was an awkward moment, when I told Renae and Drew to look at each other and ignore me for a moment.

As my shutter fired away, I could hear Renae say this to Drew,

"You have nice eyes"

So much of who we are can be conveyed through our eyes. They are in fact, the windows to our souls. As I shot Renae and Drew's engagement session last Saturday, it was evident that their souls are matched perfectly, and I believe that, (as cliche' as this may sound) in that moment when Renae looked into Drew's eyes... she saw herself.

These two were so much fun to photograph, and Renae was absolutely GORGEOUS!

First Harvest at Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to be a part of Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery's first harvest of the season. What a great experience! Over 60 people showed up early Sunday morning to harvest the grapes, and enjoy some good food and wine.

I've known Tonya for a few years now, and was so honored when she asked me to photograph their Kansas City reception last Saturday evening. They got married the weekend before in Mexico, and returned from their honeymoon in time to celebrate with their family and friends here in KC.

We met up a couple hours before the start of the reception for a few portraits. I love this first set with their dog... so adorable!

Ummm... can someone say GORGEOUS!

For anyone who was out Saturday, you know it was hot out. I'm pretty sure I sweated off about 5lbs.

Cheesecake in the Raw

You may remember my post a while back on our recent decision to live a healthier life. We're going on five weeks now, and so far so good. We do feel better, and definitely more healthier than we have felt in quite a while. It's also been fun discovering ways to create meals without all the sugar and processed ingredients. For now, we're completely vegan... that's right no meat, and no dairy, and nothing processed or refined. We eat organic, and raw as much as possible. Just how long we'll stay 100% vegan, I'm not sure... I guess as long as possible.

Tonight, I decided to try a vegan version of a cheesecake. Here are some of the ingredients I used for the "cheese" portion.

My crust consisted of pecans and raisins. I soaked the pecans overnight, and then mixed them together with the raisins in a food processor. The "cheese" mix was then poured over the crust (which was in a springform pan) and then placed in the freezer for a few hours.

It was actually quite good, and I ended up having two pieces. I will definitely make this recipe again. Maybe next time I'll use a little cacao :)

Hannah :: Senior 2011

I have known Hannah, and her family for years. I met them back in 2003 (I think) through the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired. Hannah's brother, Mitchell, was born with cerebral palsy, and had attended the school through kindergarten. For a couple of years, I had the opportunity of working with Mitchell, and providing home care assistance for his family. I loved the time I spent with Mitchell and his family... I was even able to dance with Mitchell at my wedding.

Hannah is an amazing sister, daughter, and friend. She loves her family, especially her brother with all her heart. In fact, she even wrote a book about her brother after he was born.

It had been awhile since I had seen the family when I was asked to shoot Hannah's senior pictures. When I showed up at their home, I was blown away by the beautiful woman Hannah had become, and was even more amazed at the deep voice that Mitchell had developed as he now prepares to enter high school :)

I was so honored to be able to document this special moment in Hannah's life. She has such a sweet spirit, and a kind and generous heart. She loves to volunteer her time as well, and is always finding ways to help out and give back.

Hannah, thank you so much for trusting me with this! I feel so honored, and absolutely loved it! I pray the very best for you as you enter into this new season in your life!

Gonzalez Family

Last Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the Gonzalez family. A good friend, and client of mine referred the family to me, and I'm so grateful she did! Katie and her husband, Chris, have two darling boys... Andrew and Luke.

Luke is the youngest, and loves the camera. The jury is still out on what Andrew thinks of me. I'm sure he was wondering "Who is this crazy lady with a lens in my face!?" :)

au naturale

I hate disease. It rips the body apart, and destroys life. Cancer is among the worst. The very mention of it's name strikes fear and despair. In the past year, Paul and I have had numerous family members diagnosed with one or more types of this ugly disease. It's made us frustrated, even furious. We're at war with this vile illness, and sadly most are losing.

For those who know me, you know I'm stubborn, strong-willed... a fighter. I don't like to give up and walk away. I like to make things happen, and prepare for things before they happen. I've secretly always wanted to be a boy scout... just ask my husband.... I have a first aid kit and car repair kit stored in my jeep, as well as mace and toilet paper, cause you just never know....

So, in light of the illness in our families, and with my knack of being prepared, Paul and I have begun researching on health and diet, and the powerful correlation between the two. We're going Au Naturale so to speak. Here's a little glimpse into our new venture...

Juicing is our favorite part... a great way to load up on tons of nutrients!

I now crave salads.... Never in my life did I imagine I would type that.

Here is a vegan version of a philly cheesteak using portobello mushrooms instead of meat. You may grimace, but it's actually really good!

It's a little extra work, and a bit time consuming, but we feel great, and plan to keep on going.

Finding my Sweet Spot

I love photography. There's no question about it... It consumes almost every waking moment. But even the things you are most passionate about, can become the very thing that wears you down. I found myself in such a situation.... in a place where I focused all my attention and energy on capturing and creating moments and memories for other people... I failed to take time out for myself. I failed to create my own memories. I failed to take care of my passion. I needed to fall in love again.... fall in love with photography.... fall in love with life. So... over the 4th of July, I quit my job... just for a few days. No deadlines, no album designs or lightroom editing. No phone calls or email, or blog stalking.

Paul and I headed north for our annual trip to Minnesota... and to a breath of fresh air in our lives. We spent 5 relaxing days in a tent, in a hammock, by the lake, by the campfire, canoeing the St. Croix river, and kayaking on Clear Lake. It was bliss.

Now that we've returned, I have some catching up to do, but here are a couple of images from the trip.

Saturday, I headed back down to Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery for Art in the Vines. I had been looking forward to this event for quite sometime. Unfortunately, the rainforest has taken over Kansas City, and the event quickly became Art in the Rain....

I have a problem... I have too many favorites from Lisa and Brandon's wedding last Saturday!

I've been waiting a year for their wedding, so I don't think one blog post will do it justice.

Brandon and Lisa chose to have their wedding at Hawthorne House in Parkville.

I have always wanted to shoot here, and it was worth the wait!

The lovely Ashley Hotka, with Good Earth Floral Design Studio, provided the amazing flowers for the day.

Lisa's mom, is amazing... I love how much she loves her daughter!

Lisa, you are simply gorgeous!

I also love it when my bride and grooms choose to see each other before the ceremony.
It gives them time for only each other.... something bride and grooms rarely get on their wedding day.

Brandon is such an awesome man... he loves Lisa so much, and it showed all day long!

Brandon and Lisa :: Rehearsal Dinner

I met Brandon and Lisa a year ago in the front room of my old house. I fell in love with them the moment I met them. I did their engagement session last June, and couldn't wait to shoot their wedding! Before their wedding day, Lisa invited me to come to their rehearsal dinner at Dave and Busters in the Legends shopping area.

Somerset Ridge Vineyard & Winery

This past Sunday, Paul and I drove down toward Louisburg to Somerset Ridge Vineyard and Winery. I had met Cindy, earlier this month at the Healthy Food and Good Wine fundraiser. Cindy and her husband, Dennis, are amazing, and run their family owned vineyard with great pride. Their hospitality and friendliness are unmatched. To walk in the doors of their winery, is like walking into your own home. Each person is greeted as if they are family, and are welcomed into the tasting room with open arms.
Cindy and Dennis, handcraft their premium wines from Kansas grown grapes. Somerset is an amazing place, and I highly recommend a visit! Their tasting room is open from 11-5pm Wednesday through Saturday, and noon to 5pm on Sunday.

Make sure to bring your friends along! Paul and I plan on going as often as we can!

Cindy and Dennis, it was so great to meet you both, and visit your beautiful vineyard. I can't wait to come back!

Cortney and Matt :: Engagement

I know I've said this before, but I have the best clients in the world! Matt and Cortney are no exception! I met them a few weeks ago, after they were referred to me by a bride whom I had met with a couple years ago. It's always such an honor to be referred by others!

The moment I met Matt and Cortney, I knew they were going to be special... and a ton of fun! They exceeded my expectations, and I had an absolute blast photographing their engagement session last Saturday!

We began at the Plaza, and ended the session with a glass.... ummm... bottle of wine at the Celler Rat, located at 17th and Baltimore. What a great place, I highly recommend it!

We hung out for a bit after our session, and I got to know Matt and Cortney even better as we shared stories, and opinions on life, relationships, and of course... good wine. I feel so lucky to have met these two, and am so honored that they chose me as their photographer! I truly treasure this opportunity! More Healthy Food and Good Wine!

Last Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend, and photograph the Healthy Food and Good Wine fundraiser for St. Joseph Medical Center. It was a farm to table event which featured local producers, and restaurants. The fundraiser also included an Iron Chef competition, which was sponsored by Somerset Ridge Winery, and featured the following chefs:

Jasper Mirable, Jr. of Jaspers Restaurant
Michael Foust of The Farmhouse
Tate Roberts of EBT Restaurant

Hungry yet?

Tate was the winner of the Iron Chef competition. I'm sure the judges had a tough time deciding. All the chefs did an amazing job!

Proceeds from this fundraiser are going toward enhanced imaging technology for patients with critical neurological diagnosis. It is the goal and aim of St. Joseph Medical Center to provide the foremost in neurosurgical treatment opportunities.

Over 400 people were in attendance for this great event. I am proud to have been one of them!

Welcome Ellianna Reese!

This morning, I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Ellianna Reese. She entered the world at 4am this morning, and she is absolutely gorgeous! I am so happy for, and so very proud of my friend!

The weekend had begun with rain, but by the time of Tony and Kit's wedding, the weather reached absolute perfection. I met Tony and Kit on a very chilly morning last December to shoot their mini session. From the moment they began to describe their plans, I knew their wedding would be amazing.

I was not disappointed.

Tony and Kit chose to have their wedding at A Frog Prince in Harrisonville, MO. This place was perfect for their wedding day! A Frog Prince is family owned, and run by Tammy and Randy Grady. Their daughter, Alex, also helps out with wedding coordination and DJ extrodinaire.

Bear with me on the images... I had such a hard time narrowing down my favorites for this post. We begin with the bride and her girls in the elegant bridal suite.

Their vows were beautiful. It was evident in every word, and even through Tony's tears, just how much these two mean to each other.

Tiffany & Dan :: Engagement Session

I fell in love with Tiffany the moment I called to tell her she had won my free wedding package giveaway last November. We met for the first time a few weeks ago. She was waiting by the bar at Lucky's; I was running late. We spent close to three hours talking that night; I didn't even know how long we had been talking until I got in my jeep to leave. I couldn't wait to do this engagement session for her and Dan! So, as promised, here are some highlights from Sunday's session.

We did this session down in the Westbottoms, where pigeons run rampant. One of the pigeons made himself quite comfortable with Tiffany... she officially became my first "bird bombing" on a session :)
Their wedding will take place in Mexico this November. I have the honor of photographing their reception when they return in December... I can't wait!

Tiffany and Dan, words cannot express how excited I am to be your photographer! I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed taking them! You guys are perfect for each other! I am so happy to have met you both!
